Our Mount interns are shining and the lights are on...
Ann Czapski!
Ann completed her first Internship at Linganore High School with 9th and 10th graders. For her Internship II, she was placed at Crestwood Middle School in the 6th grade. She is a Mount Ambassador and the president of Mount's chapter of the Mathematical Association of America. She enjoys playing the piano and soccer!
Ann's internship has meant a lot to her. It was the first time she was able to explore what kind of teacher she wants to be. She learned a lot from her mentor, which she will use in her future classroom. She had the opportunity to explore what activities and methods were effective and beneficial for diverse students. She described her internships as "the first steps into shaping [herself] into the best teacher [she] can be with the support and feedback of excellent education professionals."
Ann has had several experiences throughout her internships. Working with the greatly diverse group of students at Crestwood Middle School was one of her greatest experiences. She taught four different mathematics classes and she enjoyed the challenge of meeting the needs of all the various learners with different backgrounds. Another experience that she took away from her internship II was the relationships that she built with faculty members at Crestwood Middle School.
Her advice for her future interns: "This is the time for you to learn everything you want to know about being a teacher. Do not be afraid to ask
questions or step out of your comfort zone when you get up in front of your
students. It is okay to have lessons where you feel like you failed; it is the best way to learn what works and doesn’t work for you and for your students. Taking the a little time to reflect on yourself and your teaching goes a long way."
Being placed at Crestwood Middle School meant that Ann was a part of the Mount Teacher Academy. She had many opportunities that other interns were unable to partake in. One was the bus tour, where she learned a lot about the diverse communities that she students were coming from. Also, she was able to attend professional development workshops, which aided in her understanding of student diversity.
